The Hidden Secret Inside Your Coffee Beans

Posted by

"Happiness in a cup" is how coffee-lovers describe a truly excellent cup of coffee. But, is all coffee worthy of being called excellent? At Mill Creek Spice Company, we don't believe so, and excellent is the only way coffee should be! For this reason, producing only the best quality of whole coffee beans is our priority.

Mill Creek Spice Company sells whole coffee beans and not pre-ground coffee. A lot of wisdom stands behind this decision. Think of a coffee bean as a tightly wrapped package with something very special hidden inside. Once opened, you only have a little time to enjoy your surprise before it disappears.

What exactly is wrapped within a coffee bean?

Coffee beans contain volatile oils that quickly evaporate in air. For this reason, the freshness of ground coffee is measured in minutes, or at best a few hours. However, the freshness of whole coffee beans can last for weeks.

Second, coffee beans contain around 1,000 different subtle aromas and flavors. Studies prove that coffee loses as much as 60% of its aroma just 15 minutes after grinding. So, think again before buying a bag of pre-ground coffee that may have been sitting on the shelf for months!

Third, coffee oils are water-soluble and immediately start to dilute when exposed to moisture in the environment. When freshly ground and brewed, those magical coffee oils dissolve in the water for you to enjoy, instead of dissipating due to moisture in the environment. Whole beans preserve all of the freshness and virtues present in coffee.

How to grind coffee at home?

Despite its major downsides, most people choose pre-ground coffee by convenience. However, there are fast and inexpensive ways to grind coffee at home:

  • If you have one, using your blender or food processor could be your best bet and a great life hacking tip. Some of these machines even have a handy "grind" setting. For best results, you should start with a small amount, and gradually add more beans until you have the desired amount.
  • If you don't have a blender, you can use the good old mortar and pestle. We recommend starting with just a few beans at a time. It might be difficult at first, but with practice, you should be able to grind your coffee relatively quickly. Plus, a little exercise is a great way to wake up in the morning!
  • But the best option is to invest in a coffee grinder. Krups has an excellent electric coffee grinder, which is equipped with a 200-watt motor for lightning-fast grinding. With its high-capacity, it can grind enough beans to brew up to 12 cups of coffee at a time. The Krups F203 is rated as the #1 Best Seller on Amazon and sells for less than $20.

No matter which method you choose, it’s best to grind only the amount you intend to brew. Then store the remaining coffee away from light and heat to preserve it's delicate balance of flavors.

Each whole coffee bean locks in a wide range of sweet-smelling aromas and delightful flavors. At Mill Creek Spice Company, we will never sell pre-ground coffee. We only roast high-quality arabica beans, and we ship them to you fresh-from-the-roaster in a re-sealable bag, the perfect place to store your precious beans. So, let's wake up and grind some excellent fresh coffee!
