The Flavors of the Caribbean

Posted by

Today’s flavorful and spicy Caribbean cuisine results from a patchwork of nearly 400 years of significant cultural influences. Originated by the Arawaks and the Caribs, original inhabitants of the islands, Caribbean cookery was influenced later by Spanish, British, French and Dutch colonizers. Adding to that, African, Indian, Chinese and North American travelers have had significant impact on Caribbean cooking. Needless to say, Caribbean food is probably one of the most culturally diverse cuisines in the world.

In a 2013 interview for the Travel+Leisure magazine, Puerto Rican chef Wilo Benet says, "Each of the islands has a series of elements that set them apart." Although traditions and specialties vary, some ingredients and dishes can be savored throughout the region. From fresh seafood, tropical fruits and a wide variety of spices, the combinations are endless. According to Virginia Burke, author of Eat Caribbean, "Caribbean food has something for everyone."
